Most Adopt a Pet shelter and rescue users find it easiest to use our customizable Portable Pet List (click here) widget code instead of the Pet List API. We strongly recommend exploring that option first.
The Adopt a Pet "Pet List API" allows animal welfare organizations to display their adoptable pets on their organization's website with code that is customizable by website programmers. It is provided free of charge to each shelter or rescue organization.
How to use your Pet List API:
- Log in to your shelter account https://www.adoptapet.com/account/login/as_publicist
- From the Pet Lists menu, select "Pet List API"
- On the Pet List API page, copy the displayed username and password and click "API documentation" link to access, review, and bookmark that information.
- Go back to your Pet List API page and read the Terms of Use.
- Check the box indicating you've read the Terms of Use, and click "Get the API Key" button.
- Work with your website programmer to use the Pet List API on your organization's website.
Notes:
- Adopt a Pet is unable to provide technical support beyond what is included in the API documentation.
- XML outputs are not supported.
- The Pet List API is per shelter/rescue account. It only displays one shelter/rescue account's adoptable pets with limited information and links to each pet's page on Adopt a Pet where adopters can see all that pet's details.
- Adopted pets are not able to be displayed.
Pet Search API
- The Pet List API is not available to the general public, and only displays one shelter's pets. If you are not with a shelter or rescue, you can use these free search widgets and links on your website. Also, high-traffic commerical websites may find out more info about become a paying search API partner here.
