The best photo size for pets on Adopt a Pet is not too big, and not too small.
If you are adding pet photos taken by an smartphone's 12MP camera, the default size is usually great.
If you are adding photos taken by a digital camera, you may need to shrink them before adding them.
Ideal photos are at least 1024px tall or wide, 2MB to 4MB
Bigger and smaller photos are accepted too! Our photo tool shrinks larger photos, as long as each photo file is not larger than 8MB. It's faster for you or your software to use smaller photos, but at least 1024 px is ideal to look their best.
Ideal size ratio
4:3 (width:height) is great, or a square.
For the 1st photo, a square may work best. That's because the pet's 1st photo appears as a square "thumbnail" photo in pet search results. If horizontal, our system crops off the sides to make a square. If vertical, it crops off the top and bottom (equally from both) to make a square. So keep that in mind when choosing a pet's 1st photo. It ma at least that main (1st) photo to a square!
Tip: If you don't have photo editing software to resize (or crop), try this free online tool!
